Now the Circus Begins

In an announcement breathlessly awaited for well over a decade, long-time Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle announced his retirement. Now the floodgates open for what stands to be a vigerous and crowded race.

Several prominent Democratic lawyers and judges have been suggesting that they would put their names in the hat for DA, would Earle ever step aside. Besides three experienced prosecutors from Earle’s office, Judge Meurer was widely regarded as maneuvering for the DA job when she retired this year as state district judge. Attorney Randy Leavitt, the assistant county district attorney is also expected to enter the race.

All this threatens to overshadow the building hubbub over the Travis Co. Tax Assessor’s office. Glen Maxey and incumbent Nelda Wells-Spears are already exchanging wicked barbs and the fur is flying.

This promises to be an exciting county convention.
